pre-view: The Horrors// Flex
I’m loving how the PR people have simply copied some press text from around 2005, I quote “Whilst Great Britain is dancing to the new wave disco sound of Franz Ferdinand, the message of five piece The Horrors is a different one: Their music has to be gloomy, nevertheless it’s supposed to crack and sound a little intricate, The Stooges and The Jesus & Mary Chain seem to beckon. But the best thing will be to see yourself and enjoy The Horrors live! The next chance is their show at Flex on the 19th of November”
What I do have to say – I was never really into The Horrors – up until Sea Within A Sea, which got me hooked and not expecting them to do any better, they delivered the album of 2011. No one expected them to stick around long when they first released Jack The Ripper and the like – they were mainly known for their big hair and skinny skeleton legs. But then there was Primary Colours something which probably has come as quite a shock to the vast majority who dismissed the band during their initial hype-fuelled rise and even raked a Mercury Award nomination for themselves.
And then there was Skying – a pure masterpiece. Most certainly the album that channelled the vibe of 2011 the best - plaintive and sombre. Lyrics that a far from the ones of the hyped bands of 2011, The Vaccines or Viva Brother – intense and vague at the same time. Who would have expected The Horrors creating and brooding over a song like ‘Still Life’ back in 2007.
Under a sky, no one sees,
Waiting, watching it happening.
Don’t hurry give it time,
Things are the way they have to be.
Slow down, give it time,
Still life, you know I’m listening.
The moment that you want is coming if you give it time
