spot on: Baptism.

Baptism, hailing from Birmingham and consisting of one member only – caught our attention with a short email only. Well or with the link to soundcloud… and the cross with palms in it. Anyway, hear what Luke Morgan has to say about Baptism!
What’s the story behind the name of the band?
Well, it’s taken from Crystal Castles song ‘Baptism’. It just seemed like such a strong word and had great symbolism to it.
The best records of all times in the whole wide world?
Toughie. I do love some Bowie, so the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ album would be up there. And you can’t forget The Smiths ‘The Queen Is Dead’. Or just anything from The Cure.
As a child who did you want to be like?
Michael Owen. Football is a huge passion of mine, and he was my favourite player.
What’s the most embarrassing record in your collection?
It depends what you think of as embarrassing. I have some Ellie Goulding and Rihanna about, but I don’t know if I’m embarrassed about it. Much…
A book/song that changed me
A book – The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. I read it for my English Literature course, and it’s become my favourite novel. Ondaatje’s descriptions are incredible, definitely makes you feel inspired. A Song? Maybe Dive – Sometime. It was only released fairly recently, but changed my whole way of looking at music and opened up a whole new musical direction for me.
Our favourite place
My favourite place is my bedroom back at my Mums house, a great sanctuary to make some great tunes.
What influences would you say are present in your music?
Hmm, definitely bands like Dive and Wild Nothing when it comes to the writing process and overall style. But other bands like The XX, We Are Scientists and Foals are more general influences that have shaped my sound.
What process do you go through when you write your music?
I tend to mess about on my guitar until I find something I think sounds good, then record it and work around that one guitar line. After I’ve got a basis for a song I’ll then look through old lyrics I’ve written or just write some new ones. It’s generally not a long process, I’ll know if a songs worth continuing with after the first hour or so of working on it.
Are you seeking fame or fortune, birds or something altogether different?
Birds sound good, but my girlfriend won’t be happy to hear me say that… but I’m gonna go with none of those. It’d be great to be able to make a living off my music, but to influence other musicians like other bands have influenced me… that’d be the dream.
How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
Fuzzy dream grunge-pop.
