TOY’s amazing remix of No Ladder pointed us towards the brilliant band Coves who are made up by the talented duo Rekekah Wood and multi-instrumentalist John Rigard who, since forming just over a year ago in Lemington Spa, have caused a rouse with their first EP Cast A Shadow. Their music is a bit lo-fi, garage rocky and just all around amazing. Today they are playing a gig presented by All Tomorrow’s Parties at the Sebright Arms – don’t miss it! They’re one of the first bands to take part in their new monthly gig series, in which, ATP work together with band to come up with ideas for entertainment – DJs, films, projections, etc.
What’s the story behind the name of the band?
JOHN: It’s an old fashioned word for friends or fellows… me and Beck are Coves.
The best records of all time in the whole wide world?
JOHN: Feels Like We Only Go Backwards – Tame Impala
As a child who did you want to be like?
JOHN: I invented a character in my head and played out his life on a daily basis in my imagination…I’m glad I’m not like him…he was an idiot.
BECK: Edie Sedgwick
What’s the most embarrassing record in your collection?
JOHN: The first Paul McCartney album RAM – it’s also one of my favourites
A book/song that changed us
JOHN: When me and Beck first got together in the studio she had NEVER sang before so was really nervous…as soon as she started I was blown away… she reminded me of Mazzy Star…I played her Fade Into You and all of a sudden she had a style and we had a band.
What influences would you say was present in your music?
JOHN: 60’s nuggetsy fuzz, 50’s everyley bros reverbs, 90’s rolling beats, rock n roll filtered through tranquilizers
What process do you go through when you write your music?
JOHN: Our Coves cave is a mess of equipment and wires…some of it works, some of it doesn’t…I will lose myself in there and when there is a base Beck will come round…we will drink and have fun and not leave until we have written a song
Are you seeking fame or fortune, birds or something altogether different?
JOHN: My only true passion is in the studio writing, arranging and producing…I want nothing more than to be able to survive and do this only.
How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
JOHN: Woozy Big Fuzz Pop for dancing or drifting.
