spot on: trophys

There’s so many bands out right now and it really is hard to stick out amongst the numerous others.  Trophys are one of those young British groups having that little extra potential and I’m also firmly convinced that they sound a little bit like “Cajun Dance Party with Synths” – some might disapprove. They definitely list all the right influences in the q&a with us. And even though their latest release is called “Funeral” – I couldn’t imagine anything better than soaking up the first sunbeams and riding in the countryside on my bike.

What’s the story behind the name of the band?
We were thinking up names and chose Trophys straight away, we’re also illiterate.

The best records of all times in the whole wide world?
Bloc Party – Silent Alarm, Arctic Monkeys – WPSIATWIN, Foo Fighters There Is Nothing Left To Loose etc.

As a child who did you want to be like?
I wanted to be like Billie Joe Armstrong, I still have posters of Green Day on my walls

What’s the most embarrassing record in your collection?
Probably Drake Bells album, not ashamed of that!

A book/song that changed us
Heavier Than Heaven, that book about Kurt Cobain’s life was very inspiring to me and the song ‘Home Away From Here’ by Touche Amoure really changed my thinking towards song writing, how you could just write a 1:50 second song and make it so raw and full of anger/emotion made me rethink everything about songwriting.

Our favourite place
One of my favourite places in Maidstone would be Whatman park, real nice in the summer just good to cotch or Brenchly Gardens, some real good summers spent there.

What influences would you say was present in your music?
Bands like IS TROPICAL and EGYPTIAN HIP HOP have influenced us, when I saw them live they just opened up a new like world of music to me. The same with WASHED OUT and TORO Y MOI, ODD FUTURE made me realise I can be completely honest with my lyrics and still be creative.

What process do you go through when you write your music?
We usually go through phases, we make the music and I’ll put the words down, it usually takes a long time before we settle on both.

Are you seeking fame or fortune, birds or something altogether different?
Just to make something of ourselves

How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
HEAVY SYNTH
